Since last November, PKR has seen its political fortunes fade across three successive elections, with its latest setback coming in the Negeri Sembilan polls.
As PKR marks its 23rd anniversary, secretary-general Fuziah Salleh reflected on the party’s trajectory, acknowledging that its quest to build a better Malaysia remains unfulfilled.
Fuziah (above) recalled the birth of PKR following the merger between Parti Keadilan Nasional and Parti Rakyat Malaysia (PRM) on Aug 3, 2003.
Noting that the “historic moment is still fresh in my memory”, the former Kuantan MP said: “At that time, we were not merely launching a new political party, but carrying a grand ambition to build a more just Malaysia with integrity.”
“I still remember when the president of PRM, the late Syed Husin Ali, along with Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail and early freedom fighters, came together to shoulder the hopes of forming PKR,” she said on Facebook today.
Fuziah, who also serves as deputy domestic trade and cost of living minister, expressed gratitude for being entrusted as PKR’s inaugural Women’s wing chief.
She noted that building the women’s wing, from the northern tip of Perlis to the eastern edge of Sabah, was no easy feat.
“A year after its establishment, PKR suffered a major blow in the 2004 general election, winning only a single parliamentary seat.
“Many felt that this struggle would not last long, but we chose to move forward and learn from every weakness until we successfully made history by denying the (government) two-thirds parliamentary majority in the 2008 general election,” she said.
Fighting spirit not broken
She added that despite two decades of trials, PKR's fighting spirit was never broken.
“Alhamdulillah, all the sacrifices finally bore fruit when (PKR president and Pakatan Harapan chairperson) Anwar Ibrahim was appointed prime minister.
“Reflecting on the party’s ups and downs, PKR has taught us that this struggle never chooses an easy path. However, we cannot remain trapped in nostalgia and past successes.
“Every test matures us, every defeat opens space for self-reflection, and every challenge reminds us that the struggle to build a better Malaysia is far from over,” she said.
Fuziah added that most poignant of all was remembering the many key figures and comrades-in-arms who passed away along the way.
“However, the values and sacrifices they left behind will continue to be a legacy for us all. Happy anniversary, PKR,” she said.
Earlier, PKR lawmaker Wong Chen penned a scathing rebuke of both his party and Harapan, the coalition of which PKR is the linchpin.
