This is the famous Afghan child Sharbat Gula. This picture appeared on National Geographic's cover in 1984. I first read the story about her then. She was 12 years old. I believe the picture was taken in Peshawar (Pak - Afghan border).

In 2021 when the Taliban took over Kabul, Sharbat Gula faced the threat of being deported from Pakistan back to Afghanistan. She applied for refugee status in Italy and was granted her application. The Italian government flew Sharbat and her four children to Rome, where she has been living since. At last this is Sharbat Gula smiling - in Rome.
