PETALING JAYA:
Police are investigating whether a four-month-old baby girl was abused and killed by her step-grandmother at a house in Taman Sri Saujana, Johor Bahru, last month.

Johor police chief Ab Rahaman Arsad said a 39-year-old woman had filed a report on July 31 morning, claiming the baby had been found dead while sleeping in the house.

“Medical personnel who were called to the scene attempted to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on the baby, but she was pronounced dead at the scene at 10.30am the same day.

“Initially, the investigation was conducted under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001 for neglect resulting in the victim’s death,” he told a press conference at the Johor police headquarters.

However, he said on Aug 2, a post-mortem conducted at Pasir Gudang Hospital found that the cause of death was trauma to the abdomen and chest caused by a blunt object.

Rahaman said the investigation papers were subsequently reclassified under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder, and that police then detained the suspect as well as the baby’s grandfather and mother to assist in investigations.

The baby had been under the care of her step-grandmother as her 18-year-old mother is still studying in college.

Rahaman said all the suspects were remanded from Aug 2 until tomorrow, and the completed investigation papers were referred to the Johor prosecution office yesterday.

“We received instructions to charge the victim’s step-grandmother under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder at the Kota Tinggi magistrates’ court tomorrow,” Rahaman said. - FMT
