PETALING JAYA:
Investigations into the royal commission of inquiry’s Tabung Haji findings must be conducted transparently, independently and professionally to set the record straight, said Armizan Mohd Ali (GRS-Papar).

The Gabungan Rakyat Sabah secretary-general said the problem with TH’s management between 2014 and 2020 had long been the centre of political disputes, with slanderous accusations thrown by various parties.

Armizan said this situation had made it hard for Malaysians to determine truth from lies and to identify the victims of slander.

He added that these disputes drowned out two key issues: that the government had to bail out TH to protect its 9.7 million depositors, and that this required public funds.

“Although this was a necessity at the time, the financial implications need to be managed over a long period of time.

“The reality is that this burden has taken up finances that could have been channelled towards infrastructural needs and providing additional aid to the people,” he said in debating the RCI’s TH report in the Dewan Rakyat today.

Armizan, who is the domestic trade and cost of living minister, said this necessitated holistic and transparent investigations to ensure justice is served for all parties involved.

“What’s most important is obtaining justice for the people and Tabung Haji’s depositors,” he added.

Armizan also warned against making populist decisions that would cause large financial implications for short-term political gain, saying such moves would only affect the government’s revenue and increase its debt.

“This practice needs to be put to an end because it’s a disease that will destroy the future of the country, especially for the generations to come.” - FMT
