The Home Ministry has revoked its February ban on three books which it previously said contained communist elements and ideologies.
The three books are: “Mao Zedong: China dalam Dunia Abad ke-20”, “Memoir Shamsiah Fakeh: Dari Awas ke Rejimen Ke-10”, and “Komrad Asi (Rejimen 10): Dalam Denyut Nihilisme Sejarah”.
According to federal government gazettes published on July 16, minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail cited his power under Section 7(1) of the Printing Presses and Publications Act 1984 to retract the decision.
The revocation was made on July 1, about three months after book publisher Gerakbudaya said it would initiate a legal challenge against the bans.
According to Free Malaysia Today, Gerakbudaya founder Chong Ton Sin’s lawyer, S Abhilaash, has since confirmed that the legal challenge filed at the High Court has been withdrawn.
The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has urged Malaysian Resources Corporation Berhad (MRCB) and its executive vice-chairperson Salim Fateh Din to withdraw their RM100 million defamation suit against veteran journalist P Gunasegaram, calling it an attack on press freedom.
The suit, filed at the Shah Alam High Court on July 29, concerns an opinion piece by Gunasegaram on the LRT3 Shah Alam Line.
“Companies involved in public projects must respect news commentary and should settle legitimate grievances through the Malaysia Media Council’s dispute resolution mechanism, rather than intimidating journalists through the courts,” said CPJ’s Asia-Pacific programme coordinator Kunal Majumder.
CPJ quoted Gunasegaram as saying that the column was based on facts drawn from public records and that the “public deserves a full explanation from the government on the costs and delays” associated with the project.
A former Negeri Sembilan independent candidate pleaded not guilty to a charge of using social media to spread offensive communication believed to be linked to the royal institution.

The legislation provides for a fine of up to RM500,000 or imprisonment for up to two years, or both, as well as an additional fine of RM5,000 for each day the offence continues after conviction.
MCMC deputy public prosecutor Fadhli Ab Wahab proposed bail of RM10,000 in one surety, while lawyer Aidil Khalid appealed for a lower bail of RM3,000 for the former Sri Tanjung state seat hopeful.
The court allowed bail of RM6,000 in one surety and set Sept 22 for the next case mention.
Putra president Ibrahim Ali has accused PAS and Wawasan Negara MPs of boycotting today’s special Dewan Rakyat sitting on the Tabung Haji royal commission of inquiry report to curry favour with Umno-BN.
In a statement, he dismissed the opposition’s argument that the sitting should have been postponed because Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim was not present to table the report personally.
Ibrahim Ali Ibrahim claimed the walkout was intended to show that PAS and its allies were prepared to make sacrifices to defend Umno-BN over the controversy.
“After all, those implicated in the misconduct (revealed) in the RCI are Umno leaders.
“They are prepared to come together for a rekindled love, even though this ‘widow’ has already done all sorts of things,” he said sarcastically.
Police confirmed that a Form Two student was allegedly stabbed by a classmate during an incident on Aug 5 at a school in Shah Alam.
Bernama reported that the victim only sustained minor injuries to the arm.
“The suspect was also arrested and has since been released on police bail. In this case, there was no apparent reason or motive, and the suspect is believed to be unwell,” Shah Alam district police chief Sarudin Samah was quoted as saying.
The case is being investigated under Section 324 of the Penal Code, which criminalises voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons. - Mkini
