RoS reviewing Bersatu’s status in PN

 The Registrar of Societies is also looking into Bersatu’s exclusion from a PN meeting on July 16 to finalise the seats the coalition was contesting in the Negeri Sembilan polls.

The dispute over Bersatu’s status in PN arose after PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang recently claimed the party was no longer one of the opposition coalition’s components.

The Registrar of Societies (RoS) is reviewing a complaint from Bersatu over its membership status in Perikatan Nasional (PN).

In a statement, RoS said it was reviewing Bersatu’s concerns about its exclusion from a PN Supreme Council meeting on July 16 – which finalised the allocation of seats among the coalition’s component parties ahead of the Negeri Sembilan state election.

RoS said it received a letter from Bersatu today and is examining the complaints under the Societies Act 1966, Societies Regulations 1984, PN’s approved constitution, and RoS’s official records.

It said all information, documents and explanations submitted by the relevant parties would be scrutinised to ensure a comprehensive review in accordance with the law.

RoS stressed that all registered organisations are required to comply with the Societies Act, the relevant regulations and their respective constitutions.

“The matters raised will be examined based on the provisions of the laws currently in force,” it said.

RoS also said it would carry out its duties professionally and impartially, with no vested interest in any organisation or political party.

The dispute over Bersatu’s status in PN arose after PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang recently claimed the party was no longer one of the opposition coalition’s components.

Hadi argued that PN’s constitution stipulated that any party choosing to join or form another alliance would automatically lose its membership in the coalition.

He cited Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin’s previous statement that the party would form a new coalition with several parties after the Negeri Sembilan state election.

Bersatu secretary-general Azmin Ali then rejected Hadi’s claim, saying there is no clause in PN’s constitution providing for the automatic termination of a component party’s membership.

Muhyiddin previously said Bersatu was not invited to attend the special PN Supreme Council meeting on July 16 that finalised the allocation of seats among the coalition’s component parties ahead of the Negeri Sembilan state election. - FMT
