Ex-Baling MP Azeez detained by Dang Wangi cops, says son

PETALING JAYA:

Former Tabung Haji (TH) chairman Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim, who is expected to face graft charges tomorrow, has been detained by Dang Wangi police, his son says.

Azeez’s son, Azman Azeez, said in a Facebook post that his father is expected to be remanded tomorrow.

“As a son, it isn’t easy to see my father endure this. I am sad, afraid and disappointed,” he said.

Azman, however, did not provide further details about his father’s detention.

Earlier today, it was reported that the former Baling MP is expected to be charged at the Kuala Lumpur sessions court under the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009.

The royal commission of inquiry which probed TH’s management, operations and assets from 2014 to 2020 found that losses from troubled investments had gone unrecorded and that “creative accounting” had been used to justify annual profit distributions.

The commission also traced TH’s financial problems to political interference in board appointments, unsustainable hibah payouts, and the national audit department’s decision to soften its findings over concerns about depositor confidence.

Azman expressed hope that any probe against his father would be conducted “fairly, transparently and without prejudice”.

“An allegation is merely an allegation until it is proven in court.”

Azman, who is also an Umno Youth leader, asked his followers to pray for his father and for the truth to prevail.

Meanwhile, a source told FMT that police would bring Azeez to court to be charged under the MACC Act after obtaining a remand order. - FMT
