Representatives of Mandiri and another NGO will sign the pair’s release papers at the Wangsa Maju police headquarters.
Mandiri coordinator Hamdin Nordin said representatives from the NGO and civil society group Hayat have been asked to go to the Wangsa Maju police headquarters to sign the pair’s release papers.
“As we wait for their release, we hope the government will not silence those fighting corruption,” he told FMT.
About 50 members of various civil society groups gathered outside the Jinjang centralised lockup here to call for the pair’s release.
Representatives of the groups earlier delivered speeches demanding that Amir and Chew be freed. They condemned what they described as the misuse of the remand process.
Police arrested the duo on Tuesday under the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001 (Amla) after they presented themselves at Bukit Aman’s commercial crime investigation department to give their statements.
Their detention drew strong criticism from former Bersih chairmen Ambiga Sreenevasan and Maria Chin Abdullah.
Inspector-General of Police Khalid Ismail previously said Mandiri was being investigated over allegations that it received funds suspected to be the proceeds of unlawful activities from 2024 till this year.
The authorities have also frozen personal and organisational bank accounts under Amla and imposed travel bans on Amir and Chew. - FMT
