PSM to contest in N Sembilan polls; court says RTD liable for copyright infringement

Negeri Sembilan polls

  • PSM will be contesting in the upcoming Negeri Sembilan polls, with the party fielding its state secretary, Tinagaran Subramaniam, for the Rahang state seat.

The party announced it at a press conference today, during which Parti Orang Asli Malaysia also declared that it will field a candidate, Dayana Dal, for the Jeram Padang state constituency.

Also present at the press conference was Muda president Amira Aisya Abdul Aziz. While Muda is not participating in this election, Amira said it will support candidates aligned with the “progressive bloc”.

Court

  • The Kuala Lumpur High Court ruled that the Road Transport Department’s (RTD) director-general is liable for copyright infringement related to Putrajaya’s special “Madani” vehicle plate number bidding programme.

In delivering his judgment in favour of the plaintiff, Ilham Madani Sdn Bhd programme director Hasan Azhari Hashim, judge Edwin Paramjothy Michael Muniandy today awarded the former RM40,000 in statutory and additional damages, as well as RM25,000 in costs.

In a statement, lawyer Rajesh Nagarajan said the judgment sends an important message that intellectual property rights are not diminished simply because the infringer is a public authority.

The plaintiff’s counsel stressed that his client had merely sought recognition of his creative work, and had never attempted to prevent the government from introducing initiatives that benefit the public.

Traffic offence

  • Foreign drivers in Perlis were issued 741 summonses by the state RTD for various offences under the Road Transport Act 1987, following enforcement operations conducted between January and last Tuesday.

Perlis RTD director Noraini Nawi said the majority of cases involved technical offences, which accounted for 210 summonses. These were followed by offences related to driver licensing (190 cases), vehicle licensing (140), tinted windows (35) and other violations (166), Bernama reported.

“This operation focuses on foreign drivers who do not possess a valid Competent Driving Licence (CDL), use vehicles without insurance coverage, do not have an International Driving Permit (IDP), have outstanding summonses, and commit various other offences,” she reportedly said during a press conference.

Noraini added that action was also taken against local vehicle owners who allowed foreign nationals to operate their vehicles without fulfilling the required conditions. - Mkini
