Jin Wei stuns 4th seeded Thai in Malaysia Masters opener

 The world No 55 women's singles shuttler beat the 18th-ranked Busanan Ongbamrungphan in three games to enter the last 16.

PETALING JAYA:
National women’s singles shuttler Goh Jin Wei staged an upset by defeating her higher-ranked Thai rival in three games at the Malaysia Masters opener today.

The world No 55 shuttler took 58 minutes to beat 18th-ranked Busanan Ongbamrungphan 21-6, 16-21, 21-10 at the Unifi Arena in Bukit Jalil, and booked her spot in the last 16.

It was her second victory in five encounters with Busanan, who was the fourth seed in this championship.

Jin Wei will meet India’s Ashmita Chaliha next.

Malaysia’s top women’s singles player, K Letshanaa, also made it to the second round after defeating Denmark’s Amalie Schulz 21-13, 19-21, 21-15 in 56 minutes.

Letshanaa will take on either Japan’s Tomoka Miyazaki or Taiwan’s Tung Ciou Tong in the last 16.

Mixed doubles pair Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Jemie Lai easily defeated the US’s Chen Zhi Yi-Francesca Corbett 21-8, 21-16 in 26 minutes to enter the last 16.

Soon Huat-Shevon will face Taiwan’s Wu Guan Xun-Lee Chia Hsin next.

However, two other Malaysian mixed doubles pairs, who had their partners switched by BAM to try out new combinations, failed to clear the first round.

Hoo Pang Ron-Lai Pei Jing fell to China’s world No 11 pair Cheng Xing-Zhang Chi 21-13, 12-21, 15-21 in 52 minutes, while Jimmy Wong-Cheng Su Yin were defeated by Denmark’s Mathias Christiansen-Alexandra Boje 13-21, 15-21 in 36 minutes.

Earlier, rising Malaysian women’s doubles pair Low Zi Yu-Noraqilah Maisarah Ramdan also lost to China’s Bao Li Jing-Cao Zi Han 18-21, 12-21 in 38 minutes in the opening round.

Zi Yu-Noraqilah were runners-up in the China Masters last week.

Another Malaysian women’s doubles pair, Cheng Su Hui-Tan Zhing Hui, lost to Japanese duo Arisa Igarashi-Chiharu Shida 21-8, 21-12 in 30 minutes. - FMT
