NGO urges probe on viral clip, says running over dogs with trucks not animal control

The Malaysian Stray Animal Association (SAFM) has called for an immediate investigation into an incident in which a pickup truck allegedly deliberately ran over a stray dog in a residential area in Ulu Tiram, Johor.

The incident, which reportedly occurred on May 15, was captured on closed-circuit television (CCTV), and the footage has since gone viral.

The 20-second video showed a red truck hitting the dog, leaving it writhing on the road in front of residents’ homes.

Berita Harian reported that, based on the footage and public information, the vehicle or individual involved is believed to be a contractor, subcontractor, agent, or linked to local authority activities.

“If an animal control operation was being carried out, it should have been conducted in accordance with the law, proper procedures, and humane standards,” said SAFM president R Kalaivanan.

“SAFM urges the relevant authorities, including the Johor Bahru City Council and the police, to take immediate action, including under the Animal Welfare Act 2015 and any other applicable laws.

“They should identify the driver, the vehicle owner, and any parties responsible for the use of the vehicle at the time,” he added.

Meanwhile, a Johor Bahru City Council spokesperson told Berita Harian that the council had received complaints regarding the incident.

“We will provide an immediate response regarding this incident,” the spokesperson said. - Mkini
