Kota Damansara assemblyperson Izuan Ahmad Kasim has asked the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) to delay the development of a planned data centre in his constituency.
In a letter dated July 15, addressed to Petaling Jaya mayor Zahri Samingo, the PKR lawmaker urged the MBPJ to hold a public engagement session with affected residents alongside a review of all relevant technical documents connected to the development.
"I hope the views and objections received (by the MBPJ) are given the appropriate consideration to safeguard the welfare of residents and ensure balanced development," Izuan (above) said.
On July 15, a coalition of resident associations from Section 9 Kota Damansara urged the city council to reconsider the proposed business data centre.
In a letter to Zahri sighted by Malaysiakini, the coalition objected to the planning permission application for the project involving Lots 50900 to 50918 and part of government land.
Too close to housing areas
While acknowledging the role of data centres in supporting the digital economy, the residents argued that the proposed site is too close to existing housing areas.
Other concerns include potential noise from round-the-clock operations, environmental impacts including heat and high energy consumption, increased heavy traffic, road safety, and whether the project is compatible with the surrounding residential environment.
The associations represented residents in Jalan Istana Kota Section 9, Damansara Residency Section 9, and Kota Damansara Section 9 Phases 1 and 2.

"We also hope that any decisions regarding this development will be made through a transparent process and take into account the principles of sustainable development, (as well as) a balance between economic development and the well-being of the local community," they said.
Malaysiakini has contacted MBPJ, Zahri, and Sungai Buloh MP R Ramanan for their comments. - Mkini
