Royal dispute: Rembau's disputed chieftain sacks 3 nobles; ousted noble disputes decision

In the latest twist in the deepening Negeri Sembilan royal dispute, the state's Council of the Yang di-Pertuan Besar and the Ruling Chiefs (Dewan Keadilan dan Undang) (DKU) this week served dismissal letters on three Rembau nobles.

The latest action is understood to be a continuation of the council's earlier move to oust Rembau chieftain Abdul Rahim Yasin, one of the four Undang Luak who unanimously resolved to remove Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir as Negeri Sembilan's ruler in April.

According to a copy of the letters which have gone viral on social media, DKU secretary Raja Norazli Raja Nordin cited an instruction by “new” Rembau chieftain Hassan Ab Hamid affirming the sacking of Abdul Razak Yassin, Zaharuddin Idris, and Azmi Ahmad.

They are part of the Rembau's Council of Dato' Lembaga, which is part of the territory's customary leadership framework and ranked just below the undang (chieftain).

"For your information, the council confirms the revocation of the hereditary titles of the following three titleholders, in accordance with the decree of the 22nd Undang of Luak Rembau.

"The revocations take effect as follows...," said the letter dated July 15.

Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir

It said that Razak's dismissal took effect on Aug 7, 2024, while Zaharuddin and Azmi's were on Aug 12 and Aug 16 the same year, respectively.

For the record, Rahim was the recognised Rembau chieftain at that time.

Separate edicts issued to each of the nobles showed Hassan affirming decisions made by councils of Rembau nobles on the respective dates, and decreed that any actions they have taken since then are null and void.

‘We don’t recognise decision’

When contacted, Razak, who holds the title Dato' Perba, confirmed that the trio has received the letters.

However, the noble said they do not recognise the decision, claiming it was unlawful because Hassan holds no authority as he was not appointed by the Rembau nobles.

"The letter is invalid because we do not recognise the undang who issued it.

"He (Hassan) himself is not a valid chieftain, as he was not appointed by the (Council of Dato') Lembaga," Razak said.

Razak further claimed that it was also wrong for DKU and Raja Norazli to issue such a letter to them.

According to him, DKU cannot hold any meeting at the moment due to a court injunction, and thus, it cannot make any such decisions.

Razak also claimed the position of Rahim and all the other Negeri Sembilan chieftains remains status quo due to the injunction order. - Mkini
