ICs for foreigners - MCMC records 'Ratu Naga' statement

The authorities have recorded the statements of a woman using the Facebook profile, ‘Ratu Naga’ or her actual name, Syarul Ema Rena Abu Samah over a video claiming that Bangladeshi nationals were given identity cards.
In a statement here today, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) said Syarul Ema Rena was present at the Petaling Jaya District Police Headquarters today following a notice issued by the commission.
MCMC issued the notice on the woman through her husband after attempts to locate her at a premises at Jalan Klang Lama here failed, said the statement.
According to MCMC, the woman’s statement was recorded under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 and Penal Code.
Yesterday, MCMC chief operating officer Mazlan Ismail reportedly said MCMC had received complaints on the dissemination of the video and investigation were being conducted in collaboration with the police to identify the individuals involved.
“There is no compromise on the spreading of fake news. Their conduct has destroyed the well-being, prosperity and security of the people and country. They will not be exempted from receiving penalties under the existing laws,” he was quoted in the statement.
MCMC said the case would be referred to the office of the Deputy Public Prosecutor when the investigation is completed.
Meanwhile, when contacted by Bernama, Syarul Ema Rena said she was present at the police headquarters with two lawyers at about 9.50 am today.
She said the process of giving her statements went smoothly and it lasted for five hours.
“At the moment, I don’t want to make any comments and hand over the investigation to MCMC while my mobile phone and sim card have been seized for investigation. Right now, I am awaiting further action from MCMC on the case,” she added.
The woman was being investigated after the Facebook profile, 'Ratu Naga' belonging to her had allegedly uploaded a fake video of foreigners being given identity cards purportedly for the purpose of voting in the general election that went viral a few years ago. It has since resurfaced on the social media. - Bernama
